Planning a Custom Glass Railing
What homeowners, designers and contractors should coordinate before measuring and fabricating a custom glass railing system.
Begin with the structure and finished geometry
A railing follows the real slab, stair, landing and transitions. Substrate conditions and finished dimensions influence where the glass and support hardware can be located.
Plans are useful for early review, but fabrication dimensions generally depend on field-verified conditions.
Coordinate the support system early
Base shoe, standoffs, clamps, channels and other railing systems create different visual lines and place different demands on the surrounding structure.
The selected system must be reviewed against the project design, substrate and applicable requirements. Code, engineering and permit responsibilities can vary by project and jurisdiction and should be confirmed before fabrication.
Resolve transitions and openings
Corners, stair-to-landing transitions, gates and adjacent finishes are where incomplete planning becomes expensive.
- Identify every change in direction or elevation.
- Confirm gate location, swing and latch conditions when applicable.
- Coordinate posts, walls, flooring edges and finished surfaces.
- Confirm access for delivery and installation of large panels.
Build a useful project-review package
Send enough context to understand the complete run, not just one section.
- Plans or a dimensioned sketch when available.
- Wide photos of the full stair, landing, balcony or opening.
- Approximate linear footage and project location.
- Preferred hardware style and finish.
- Construction stage and target timing.
